SGA and December memes
Dec. 1st, 2018 07:50 pmI just joined a bunch of Stargate: Atlantis and McShep communities I found. I'm excited to read some new fic and I seriously love that there's still new creating happening even after the show's been off air for so long. I didn't even know I shipped them until it crept up on me.
I wish I could write though. I've tred and it's definitely not a skill I have. I keep telling myself that writers need readers - now I just have to figure out that whole leaving feedback thing. It seems like people don't appreciate comments like "loved it" though and that's all I really know how to say.
On a completely different note
zhelana has a December meme posted in her journal which I'm planning on stealing. I'm hoping to get online regularly enough to do it - and also hoping that having a 'challenge' of a type might inspire me to.
and... this is something of a First for me, posting a picture of myself online.

Date: 2018-12-01 08:13 pm (UTC)As a writer, if "loved it" is what you have to say, do say it! I appreciate hearing that every time.
If you'd like some suggestions on leaving feedback - from my perspective, things I like a commenter (the general you, here) to say?
*Copy/paste a favorite line or short quote and tell me your specific reaction to it. I love hearing about a particular way I worded something.
*Tell me what your emotional response was - did you laugh or cry or (in the case of darkfic) read through your fingers?
*Let me know if this is a second, third, whatever reading for you or maybe you stayed up too late to keep reading. Maybe you recalled a scene later and were grinning to yourself while you were waiting at the bank? :)
You don't have to get deeply personal but even one detail about your thoughts/feelings while reading can make a comment even more delightful to receive.

2a: nonspecific, nice: "Good story."
2b: specific but critical: "I don't like when ... doesn't feel like the character would do that."
3. non-specific gushing: "Oh wow, best thing I've read today! Thanks!"
4. specific AND complimentary: "The scene where.... was so sexy I just melted."; "I cried when Character said .... you captured them so well I could hear them say it.";
"Your way with lusty tension/pacing/dialogue is really perfect."
I haven't writen a lot in fandom, but I have written some. And I've certainly left loads of feedback.
The main point is: If someone's writing something and you like it enough to finish it, let them know so that they know their work was worth it and are encouraged to write more. It's ok to just say "Loved it." It's so much better than saying nothing at all. But if something really moves you, tell the author why as best as you can.

Date: 2018-12-09 03:41 am (UTC)As a fic writer, any comment is appreciated! Really! Even a "Loved it!" But musyc's suggestions above are really good, too, if you want to say more. Of course I like getting long comments, but any comment always brightens my day. I love seeing the comment notification in my inbox!

Date: 2019-05-04 08:40 pm (UTC)and personally, I love getting a "loved it" comment. what I do, when I can't find the words, is simply copy and paste a line I enjoyed and then :))) or a "this made me laugh". I know writers love knowing what worked for a reader, and that way I don't have to find the words myself, although sometimes it inspires me to say a little more.
see you around!
